Using Basho's haiku, I sought to make lines visually perform its inherent characteristic. What made poetry poetic were sound patterns like alliteration, consonance, and rhyme; rhythm, cadence and flow; image, metaphor, and antanaclasis.
The question I kept to myself throughout: 'How might I visually represent these ulterior motives of communication?'
Each letter was cut out from a line of haiku printed on layers of washi tape (masking tape).
Planning out the circular layout of the typeset before printing.
Trial and error on the arrangement of individual letters that would result in a circular shape.
